மந்திர மாவது நீறு; வானவர் மேலது நீறு;
சுந்தர மாவது நீறு; துதிக்கப் படுவது நீறு;
தந்திர மாவது நீறு; சமயத்தில் உள்ளது நீறு;
செந்துவர் வாயுமை பங்கன் திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.  1

 

manthira maavathu neeRu; vaanavar mElathu neeRru;
sunthara maavathu neeRu; thuthikkap paduvathu neeRu;
thanthira maavathu neeRu; samayaththil uLLathu neeRu;
senthuvar vaayumai pangkan thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

 

The Holy Ash [Thiru neeRu] is mantra;
The Holy Ash adorns the Celestials;
The Holy Ash is the source of beauty;
The Holy Ash brings hands together in prayer;
The Holy Ash is meditation;
The Holy Ash is spoken of in scriptures of old;
The Holy Ash is from Him – Consort of the red-lipped Goddess;
Who resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai].

 

வேதத்தில் உள்ளது நீறு; வெந்துயர் தீர்ப்பது நீறு; 
போதம் தருவது நீறு; புன்மை தவிர்ப்பது நீறு;
ஓதத் தகுவது நீறு; உண்மையில் உள்ளது நீறு;
சீதப் புனல்வயல் சூழ்ந்த திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.   2

 

vEthaththil uLLlathu neeRu; ve:nthuyar theerppathu neeRu;
pOtham tharuvathu neeRu; punmai thavirppathu neeRu;
Othath thakuvathu neeRu; uNmaiyil uLLathu neeRu;
seethap punalvayal sUzh:ntha thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

         

The Holy Ash is spoken in vēdas, the scriptures old;
The Holy Ash removes cruel sufferings;

The Holy Ash grants Siva gñāṉa;
The Holy Ash dispels meanness;
The Holy Ash has to be instructed to others with such greatness;
The Holy Ash is the Truth everlasting;
The Holy Ash is from Him,
Who resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai].

Surrounded by fields full of cool water.

சத்திய மாவது நீறு தக்கோர் புகழ்வது நீறு
பத்தி தருவது நீறு பரவ வினியது நீறு
சித்தி தருவது நீறு திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.   3

saththiyam aavathu neeRu; thakkOr pukazhvathu neeRu;
paththi tharuvathu neeRu; parava iniyathu neeRu;
siththi tharuvathu neeRu; thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

 

The Holy Ash bestow the spiritual liberation;
The Holy Ash is adorned by the sages;

The Holy Ash is the eternal truth itself;
The Holy Ash is praised by worthy people;
The Holy Ash endows one with bakthi, the pure love towards the God;
The Holy Ash is sweet to be praised;
The Holy Ash gives miraculous powers.
The Holy Ash is from Him,
Who resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai].

 

காண இனியது நீறு; கவினைத் தருவது நீறு;
பேணி அணிபவர்க்கு எல்லாம் பெருமை கொடுப்பது நீறு;
மாணந் தகைவது நீறு; மதியைத் தருவது நீறு;
சேணம் தருவது நீறு; திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.   4

 

kaaNa iniyathu neeRu; kavinaith tharuvathu neeRu;
pENi aNipavarku ellaam perumai koduppathu neeRu;
maana:n thakaivathu neeRu; mathiyaith tharuvathu neeRu;
chENa:n tharuvathu neeRu; thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

 

The Holy Ash is ash is pleasant to see;

The Holy Ash is beauty to smear;
The Holy Ash bestow greatness to the wearers with reverence;
The Holy Ash deters death;

The Holy Ash bestow good intellect;

The Holy Ash grants superiority;

The Holy Ash is from Him,

பூச இனியது நீறு; புண்ணியம் ஆவது நீறு;
பேச இனியது நீறு; பெருந்தவத் தோர்களுக்கு எல்லாம்
ஆசை கெடுப்பது நீறு; அந்தம தாவது நீறு;
தேசம் புகழ்வது நீறு;  திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.   5

pEsa viniyathu neeRu; peru:nthavath thOrkaLuk kellaam
aasai keduppathu neeRu; a:nthama thaavathu neeRu;

The Holy Ash is pleasing to smear;
The Holy Ash is the embodiment of all virtuous acts;
The Holy Ash is sweet to speak about;
The Holy Ash annuls the desires of people trying great penance;
The Holy Ash grants the ultimate goal of human beings;
The Holy Ash is praised by all the countries;

The Holy Ash is from Him,
Who resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai].

 

அருத்தம தாவது நீறு; அவலம் அறுப்பது நீறு;
வருத்தம் தணிப்பது நீறு; வானம் அளிப்பது நீறு;
பொருத்தம தாவது நீறு; புண்ணியர் பூசும்வெண் ணீறு;
திருத்தகு மாளிகை சூழ்ந்த திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.  6

aruththama thaavathu neeRu; avalam aRuppathu neeRu;
varuththa:n thaNippathu neeRu; vaanam aLippathu neeRu;
poruththama thaavathu neeRu; puNNiyar pUsumveN neeRu;
thiruththaku maaLikai sUzh:ntha thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

The Holy Ash is the resource;
The Holy Ash cuts at the root of sufferings;
The Holy Ash calms the pains physical and mental;
The Holy Ash grants heaven;

The Holy Ash is appropriate for All;
The Holy Ash smeared by people of virtuous acts;

The Holy Ash is from Him,
Who resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai],

Surrounded by beautiful mansions.

எயிலது வட்டது நீறு; இருமைக்கும் உள்ளது நீறு;
பயிலப் படுவது நீறு; பாக்கியமாவது நீறு;
துயிலைத் தடுப்பது நீறு; சுத்தம தாவது நீறு;
அயிலைப் பொலிதரு சூலத் திருவால வாயான் திருநீறே.   7

eyilathu vaddathu neeRu; irumaikkum uLLathu neeRu;
payilap paduvathu neeRu; paakkiyam aavathu neeRu;
thuyilaith thaduppathu neeRu; suththama thaavathu neeRu;
ayilaip politharu sUlath thiruvaala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

The Holy Ash destroyed three forts;
The Holy Ash is there for us in this birth and after;
The Holy Ash is practiced by smearing;

The Holy Ash our good fortune;

The Holy Ash is deters laziness;

The Holy Ash is the sacred;
The Holy Ash of Him, who has a trident shining with sharpness,
And resides in the temple of Thiruvaalavaay [Madurai].

 

இராவணன் மேலது நீறு; எண்ணத் தகுவது நீறு;
பராவண மாவது நீறு; பாவம் அறுப்பது நீறு;
தராவண மாவது நீறு; தத்துவம் ஆவது நீறு;
அராவணங் கும் திரு மேனி ஆல வாயான் திருநீறே.   8

 

iraavaNan mElathu neeRu; eNNath thakuvathu neeRu;
paraavaNam aavathu neeRu; paavam aRuppathu neeRu;
tharaavaNam aavathu neeRu; thaththuvam aavathu neeRu;
araa vaNangku:n thiru mEni aala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

 

The Holy Ash was adorned by the King RāvaNa;
The Holy Ash is to be meditated upon;
Holy Ash is the form of the parā sakthi;
The Holy Ash cuts of all sins;
The Holy Ash is the form of the ultimate reality;
The Holy Ash of Civaṉ in Ālavāy,

Who has on his holy form cobras which adore him.

 

மாலொடு அயன் அறி யாத வண்ணமும் உமுள்ளது நீறு;
மேலுறை தேவர்கள் தங்கண் மெய்யது வெண்பொடி நீறு;
ஏல உடம்புஇடர் தீர்க்கும் இன்பம் தருவது நீறு;
ஆலமது உண்ட மிடற்று எம் ஆல வாயான் திருநீறே.  9

maalodu ayan aRi yaatha vaNNnamum uLLathu neeRu;
mEluRai thEvarkaL thangkaN meyyathu veNpodi neeRu;
Ela udampidar theerkkum inpam tharuvathu neeRu;
aalama thuNda midattrem aala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

The Holy Ash has the nature of

Not being known even to VishNu and Brahma;
The Holy Ash adorns the bodis of the celestials in the upper worlds;
The Holy Ash cures the bodily sufferings and bestow happiness;
The Holy Ash of Civaṉ in Ālavāy,

Who consumed the poison as nectar and retained it in his throat.

 

குண்டிகைக் கையர்க ளோடு, சாக்கியர் கூட்டமும்  கூட
கண் திகைப் பிப்பது நீறு; கருத இனியது நீறு;
எண்திசைப் பட்ட பொருளார் ஏத்தும் தகையது நீறு;
அண்டத் தவர்பணிந்து ஏத்தும் ஆல வாயான் திருநீறே.   10

 

kuNdikaik kaiyarkaL Odu saakkiyar kUddamung kUdak
kaN thikaip pippathu neeRu; karutha iniyathu neeRu;
eN thisaip padda poruLaar Eththu:n thakaiyathu neeRu;
aNndath thavar paNi:nthu Eththum aala vaayaan thiruneeRE. 

The Holy Ash makes eyes of the Jains and Buddhists perplexed;
The Holy Ash is pleasant to meditate on;
The Holy Ash has greatness of praise by the worthy people of all eight directions;
The Holy Ash of Civaṉ in Ālavāy who is praised, and paid homage, by the celestials in heaven.

 

ஆற்றல் அடல்விடை ஏறும் ஆல வாயான் திரு நீற்றை,
போற்றிப் புகலி நிலாவும் பூசுரன் ஞானசம் பந்தன்,
தேற்றித் தென்னன் உடல் உற்ற தீப்பிணி ஆயின தீர,
சாற்றிய பாடல்கள் பத்தும் வல்லவர் நல்லவர் தாமே.   11

pOttrip pukali :nilaavum pUsuran gnaanasam pa:nthan
thEttrith thennan udaluttra theeppiNi aayina theerach
saattriya paadalkaL paththum vallavar :nallavar thaamE.
