KuRaL veNpā – குறள் வெண்பா … Prayer
The kāppu- காப்பு- part of a poem in Tamil generally offers prayer. Here the author Dēvarājā SwamikaL has use the format nērisai veNpā – நேரிசை வெண்பா. The word kāppu – காப்பு when translated means armour – கவசம்- and hence the word armour- கவசம்- is used.

துதிப்போர்க்கு வல்வினை போம்; துன்பம்போம்; நெஞ்சில்
பதிப்போர்க்குச் செல்வம் பலித்துக்-கதித்தோங்கும்
நிஷ்டையுங் கைகூடும், நிமலரருள் கந்தர்
சஷ்டி கவசம் தனை.

The sufferings great will vanish for those who pray,
The riches will increase for those who paste it in their mind,
All penance will surely bear fruit,

Saravanabavanār holding the glowing vēl
who helps the desciples and devotees
will come with his two feet adorned with gem filled anklets
making sweet sounds as they swing
and the girdle bells swing and sound
to save you

Come, come friend who lives within me,

Come with weapons and pāsa and angusa in your twelve hands,
Come, Oh young lord, who rules over me.

(pāsa is the rope and āngkusa is a toad to control).

விரைந்தெனைக் காக்க வேலோன்வருக
ஐயும் கிலியும் அடைவுடன் சவ்வும்
உய்யொளி சௌவும் உயிரைங் கிலியும்
கிலியுஞ் சௌவும் கிளரொளி யையும்

Come Oh, Lord of Vēl to protect me fast,
Let aiym, Klim and Saum which reach to you,
The Saum with its brilliant light,
The Klim which is like the soul,
And Klim, Saum and the sweet sounding Aaim,
Stand and shine before me.

(auim, klīm and saum are bhīja mantrās (seed invocation) that denotes Lord Skanda).

சண்முகன் நீயும் தனியொளியொவ்வும்
குண்டலி யாஞ்சிவ குகன் தினம் வருக!
ஆறு முகமும் அணிமுடி ஆறும்
நீறிடு நெற்றியில் நீண்ட புருவமும்
பன்னிரு கண்ணும் பவளச்செவ் வாயும்

Come Oh, Six headed one,
With your brilliant light,
Come daily without fail, great Lord,
Who is the form of Kundalini,
And come with thine six faces with six crowns,
With holy ash applied on your forehead,
With your long eye brows,
And with your twelve eyes and coral like mouth.

(Kundalani is the sakthi in coiled snake form situated in the mūlādāra chakrā.)

ஈராறு செவியில் இலகுகுண் டலமும்
ஆறிரு திண்புயத் தழகிய மார்பில்
பல்பூ ஷணமும் பதக்கமும் தரித்து

Biting of cat, dog and spider,
Tooth ache and all the diseases and attacks,
Vanish and run away, As soon as they see me,
Please Lord bless me always so that,
All these do not tarry and run away from me.

Let me praise your holy names,
He who originated from Saravana,
He who originated from flashing light,
He who was born to Tripura,
He who originated from holy sound,
He whose feet is adorned with anklets,
He who severs the cords of attachment,
He who is the nephew of VishNu and Lakshmi,
He who protected the army of devas,
He who released them from prison,
He who is called Skanda and Guha,
He who holds the resplendent Vēl,
He who is the son of Karthika maidens,
He who lives in Kadambā forest,
He who is Murugā with the sweet Vēl,
Who defeated Idumbā and Kadambā asuras.

(Guha and Muruga are other names for Skanda. When he appeared, he took the form of six babies who were looked after by the six Kārthika maidens, He loves to live in Kadamba forest. He has defeated two asuras called Idumba and Kadamba and made them as his devotees).

Hey lord who is the son of Lord Shiva,

Hey pretty Vēla, who lives in Thiruvavingudi,
Hey, Sengalva rāya who lives on Senthil mountains,
Hey king, Shanmuga who lives in Samarāpuri,

(ThiruthaNi, Kathirgāmam, Pazhani, Thiruvavinan kudi, Senthil Mountains and Samarāpuri are temples of Skanda. He is also known as Vēla and Kumara).

காரார் குழலாள் கலைமகள்நன்றாய்
என்நா இருக்க யானுனைப் பாட
எனைத் தொடர்ந்திருக்கும் எந்தை முருகனைப்
பாடினேன் ஆடினேன் பரவச மாக

பாச வினைகள் பற்றது நீங்கி
உன்பதம் பெறவே உன்னரு ளாக
அன்புடன் இரட்சி அன்னமுஞ் சொன்னமும்
மெத்த மெத்தாக, வேலா யுதனார்
சித்தி பெற்றடியேன் சிறப்புடன் வாழ்க!

Daily in the morning and evening,
All those who clean themselves,
With religious fervor and read,
Thirty six times a day
This Skanda Sashti Kavacham,
Which has been composed,
By the young Dēva Rāyan,
And meditate on that god with concentration,
And wear the sacred ash,
Will get the great blessings,
Of all the dev
as from all eight directions,
And the guardians of the eight directions.
All strangers would come and salute them,
The nine planets will be pleased
And shower their blessings,
They would shine in prettiness.
They would happily live on all days,
If they recite this Kavacham,
Which is equivalent to a Vēl.

வழியாய்க் காண மெய்யாய் விளங்கும்
விழியாற் காண வெருண்டிடும் பேய்கள்
பொல்லா தவரைப் பொடிபொடி யாக்கும்
நல்லோர் நினைவில் நடனம் புரியும்
சர்வ சத்ரு சங்கா ரத்தடி

If seen as a way, this Kavacham would show the truth,
If seen of Ghosts by their eyes, they will get scared,
It would powder bad people,
And the good people would dance with joy,
And all their enemies will be exterminated

அறிந்தென துள்ளம் அஷ்டலட்சுமிகளில்
வீரலட் சுமிக்கு விருந்துண வாகச்
சூரபத் மாவைத் துணித்தகை யதனால்
இருபத் தேழ்வர்க் குவந்தமு தளித்த
குருபரன் பழநிக் குன்றினி லிருக்கும்
சின்னக் குழந்தை சேவடி போற்றி!
